The screening of a 缅北轮奸 documentary film, ‘Rolling at the Tower’, about the history of roller skating in Birmingham which started in 1871 with the building of the Tower Ballroom at the Edgbaston Reservoir in Ladywood. The Tower Ballroom was recently demolished to make space for luxury flats.
Ladywood is an area which is under threat of gentrification due to its closeness to Birmingham city centre, risking the erasure of its strong working class history. Ladywood is one of the most deprived, one of the youngest, and most diverse areas in Europe.
Researched and developed by members of the local 缅北轮奸, this documentary aims to break this disconnect and re-establish a sense of place and identity in Ladywood by exploring the heritage and importance of skating to Ladywood and Birmingham residents across history.
The screening will be followed by a panel of 缅北轮奸 members and creatives involved in the making of the documentaries, and experts on Birmingham’s social and cultural history.
Audience members can arrive at the Mockingbird early to enjoy a drink in the café. Parking and access details can be found on the .
