Heritage Leadership Workshop with Dr Mark Pickel, Honorary Fellow

Heritage and Wellbeing
Cultural heritage engagements represent a powerful opportunity for heritage site visitors to remember their humanity in support of their wellbeing. Heritage leaders are uniquely positioned to optimise the positive impact of heritage on local communities and individuals by centring strategies on promoting human dignity. A transformational humanistic leadership approach based on supporting human dignity prepares heritage leaders to lead with impactful purpose.
Heritage Leadership Strategies
Based on Mark Pickel’s book titled Cultural Heritage Tourism Leadership, this workshop explores how current and future cultural heritage leaders can practically apply a novel transformational humanistic leadership approach that promotes visitors’ human dignity. In exploring how visitors engage in a cultural heritage site’s hospitality, aesthetic, and storied experiences, leaders will reflect on how they might apply visitor engagement learnings within a pluralistic leadership ethic that balances social, environmental, and technological considerations.
Suggesting humanistic leadership core values of human dignity, autonomy, and creativity prepares heritage leaders to develop their individual and organisational leadership purpose statement to guide future strategy development. Focusing on the core value of human dignity, leaders will reflect on the meaning of human dignity as a human right, the role of heritage in supporting human flourishing, culture as an experience of human dignity, and the effect of cultural heritage on human dignity.
Heritage case studies will help inform how cultural heritage engagements can support visitors’ sense of grounding, reflection, understanding, healing, and gratitude. Culminating in the proposition of a transformational humanistic leadership approach based on clearly defined core values, ethics, purpose, and guiding principles, a strategic framework will be introduced to assist in developing practical leadership strategies within each leader’s organisational context.
